The walk to Canossa (Millennium) – Tom Holland

For the moment I’m reading the most captivating latest book of Tom Holland : “Millennium: The End of the World and the Forging of Christendom“. I’m reading the marvellous Dutch hardback edition by Athenaeum : “De gang naar Canossa” (The walk to Canossa).

It’s a stunning account of the two centuries on either side of the apocalyptic year 1000. This was the age of Canute, William the Conqueror and Pope Gregory VII, of Vikings, monks and serfs, of the earliest castles and the invention of knighthood, and of the primal conflict between church and state. The book tells the story of how the backward, splintered and impoverished kingdoms in what’s now Western Europe, rose above the glittering empires of Byzantium and Islam.

The author ranges far in both time and space yet always returns to its central theme: the right ordering of Christendom. In view of the latest political statements of pope Benedict XVI in Israël, it seems the battle is still going on.
